Character History:
Theodore “Teddy” Altman is a tall, broad shouldered, good looking seventeen year old with blonde hair and blue eyes. He’s a senior at St. Mark’s Episcopal School in New York City, not far from Midtown High. He’s athletic and bright with a bit of a devious punk side as can be seen by the numerous piercings he has in his ears.

Oh, and did he mention he is a shapeshifter? About that…

Teddy was born with the natural ability to change his shape into anything and anyone. For the longest time he thought he was a mutant. Mutants were well known with many of them becoming superheroes and starring in the comic books that Teddy liked to read on a daily basis. His Mom knew about his ability and the fact only drew them closer, making her a touch overprotective of her son. Teddy tried his best to fit in, using his ability to change his form and become whatever the rest of his peers thought was “cool” or “attractive”. He always dreamed of being normal where other kids wanted to be a superheroes like the ones they saw fighting crime on the news every day.

Teddy kept his ability a secret until he decided to tell his good friend Greg Norris. The reason he tells Greg is partially because he has a crush on his straight friend. Teddy is gay and has been out since 8th grade but Greg is the first guy he really trusts. Greg, to Teddy’s astonishment, is supportive of Teddy. In a world where mutants are mostly feared and mistrusted, Teddy takes this as a positive sign. Greg encourages Teddy’s ability, even going so far as to ask Teddy to shift into very famous people. Teddy agrees and finds himself pretending to be Captain America and Reed Richards, taking Greg around to exclusive parties and gatherings of superheroes. After a few weeks, Teddy starts to realize that Greg only wants to hang out when Teddy is pretending to be someone else. But Greg is so nice that it doesn’t really sink in until the day that Greg coerces Teddy to break into the Avenger’s Mansion.

Once inside, Greg tries to steal some of the Avenger’s belongings to sell on the internet. Teddy tells him to stop, that he’ll make Greg if he has to. That’s when Teddy sees that Greg was only using him. Greg calls him a freak and Teddy is left alone inside of a broken down mansion.

He’s feeling pretty low when he leaves the mansion and runs into a guy about his age wearing a high-tech suit modeled after Iron Man. The kid’s name is Nathaniel Richards and he says he found Teddy because of the Avenger’s Fail Safe Initiative. He’s putting together a group of superheroes since the last of the Avengers have disbanded. Teddy doesn’t know how much of a hero he is but he decides to join Nate, modelling his look and power after the Incredible Hulk.

Teddy becomes Hulkling - a large, green tank with super strength. The rest of the team include Eli Bradley, a Super Soldier who calls himself Patriot and Billy Kaplan, a magic user who casts spells by will alone and calls himself Asgardian. Nate as Iron Lad uses the Avenger’s Mansion to train the group for a fight against Kang the Conqueror - a menace who Iron Lad says is coming to destroy everything they hold dear.

Shortly after joining the group, Teddy and Billy began dating. The two boys bond over their love of comic book heroes and all things fanboy related. One thing led to another and they found themselves hopelessly attracted to each other.

The media begins to pick up on a group of teens who are modeling themselves after the Avengers. They call the group the Young Avengers and give them nicknames: Iron Kid, Lieutenant America, Teen-Hulk and Thor Jr. The media catches them saving a group of people from a burning building and that gets the city in a buzz. Captain America and Iron Man decide to investigate, wanting to put a stop to any teenagers running around pretending to be heroes and potentially getting themselves hurt.

The Young Avenger’s next attempt at saving the city was to protect a wedding party at St. Patrick’s Cathedral from a couple of kidnappers. In the middle of the battle, Billy accidentally lights the church on fire while flirting with Teddy. It is a mistake that causes the maid of honor, Kate Bishop, to step in and save the Young Avengers from becoming crispy superheroes. The four regroup at the abandoned Avenger’s Mansion where Iron Lad/Nate tells them they are not ready to fight Kang and should return to training. Eli disagrees, wanting to continue fighting crime out in the streets. Eli walks away in frustration while Teddy and Billy reassure Nate that they’ll come back tomorrow after school and decide what to do next.

Captain America and Iron Man track down Nate at the Avenger’s Mansion. They ask him where he got his suit and what he thinks he is doing putting together a group of kids to fight crime. Nate reveals that he is actually from the future and that one day he will become Kang the Conqueror. He travelled back in time to warn the Avenger’s and try to stop himself from causing so much death and destruction. When the Avengers refused to listen, he came to the abandoned mansion to find the broken remains of The Vision. With Nate’s knowledge of future technology he was able to fix The Vision and access the Avenger’s Failsafe Program to locate the next generation of heroes.

Outside, Kate Bishop runs into Cassie Lang, the daughter of Hank Pym. Cassie is determined to join the Young Avengers and to live up to her father’s legacy. Kate, too, is interested in joining up but when they reach the mansion they run into Eli, Teddy and Billy. Kate and Eli get into a verbal fight with Eli telling her she can’t be a superhero without any super powers. Cassie gets upset and for the first time displays that she can change her size at will - similar powers to her father. The commotion causes Captain America, Iron Man and Atomic Lad to come out of the mansion and are surprised to find the Young Avengers there.

Teddy and Billy are star struck at seeing their idols in person and eagerly trust them, telling them their secret identities. They’re not certain how they are related to the Avengers (since the Failsafe Program uses family lines to track down the future heroes) but they were born with their powers. Captain America and Iron Man seem to reluctantly agree to train the would be heroes and ask the “team” to wait in the training room. The deception works and Eli, Nate, Teddy, Billy and Cassie wait inside while the adults discuss informing the teens parents about what their children are up to.

Kang the Conqueror appears outside - the adult version of Nate - and says he is tracking his errant self through the time stream. The adult Avengers realize that if Nate does not return to become Kang then History will rewrite itself and not in a good way. Meanwhile, the Young Avengers slowly realize that they have been tricked. Kate breaks them out and tells them that the Avengers are going to turn Nate over to Kang. The team vows to protect their friend and team up, using the old Avenger weapons that Kate discovered in the mansion.

The Young Avengers fight against Kang, ultimately leading to Nate killing his older self. The world begins to change, then, and slowly the Young Avengers begin to disappear. Nate doesn’t want to believe that he must become Kang. Billy tries to change his mind, using his spells but before he can complete them he disappears. For the first time, Teddy seems to live up to his Hulk name and grows angry - his body increasing in size as he demands Nate return to the future. Teddy is willing to fight Nate and make the decision for him, showing how deeply he cares for Billy, when he, too, disappears. If Nate does not become Kang then both Teddy and Billy will cease to exist. Nate finally agrees and abandons The Vision armor, heading back to the future. The time stream rights itself and Teddy and Billy exist once more, putting everything back the way it was.

The Avengers are less than happy with the teens and demand that they give up their superhero costumes or else they will tell their parents. The teens leave, sad to have lost their friend and leader. Kate and Cassie talk it over and decide to continue the Young Avengers, giving the other boys new costumes and names. Eli will remain Patriot, Teddy will become Hulkling, Billy will become Wiccan and Cassie will become Stature. The team decides to continue fighting crime in secret and tell their parents about their superpowers to eliminate the threat the Avengers hold over them.

Teddy comes to visit Billy one morning on their daily walk to their prospective schools. Teddy reminds Billy that he should really come out to his parents. When Billy tries, his parents misunderstand and instead embrace both him and Teddy - telling the boys that they knew their son was gay and approve of his relationship with Teddy. It wasn’t quite what they were expecting but it was at least happy to hear that the Kaplan’s approved and it certainly made for an interesting coming out story.

The Young Avengers continue fighting even though the Avengers are looking to reveal their secret identities to their parents. During one fight, the Super-Skrull appears and attacks Teddy, declaring that he is the heir to the Skrull throne. Teddy is incredibly confused and denies the accusation, fighting him off and deciding to go hide out while the team can figure out what to do next. Billy suggests that they hide Teddy at his house. When they show up at the Kaplan’s apartment, Teddy is surprised to see that his Mom is sitting there. The Super-Skrull attacks, blowing a hole in Billy’s apartment. Teddy refuses to believe it and the Skrull pulls out a device that he says will reveal Teddy’s true identity. If he is a Skrull it will force him into his true form. The device scans Teddy and does nothing but he turns and realizes that his mother is now a green Skrull!

The Super-Skrull reveals that the woman Teddy has known as his mother is really a traitor to the throne, having stolen Teddy as a baby and brought him to Earth. Before Teddy’s mother can do anything, she is attacked and burned. Teddy leaps forward and surrenders himself so that he can protect his teammates and Billy’s family. The Skrull takes him and flees, leaving the Young Avengers behind to deal with the aftermath.

Billy is beside himself and tells the group they are going to save Teddy. At the Avenger’s Mansion, the team runs into The Vision armor that has retained the thought patterns of Nate. He suggests that they use the Failsafe program to find another superhero to help with the rescue mission. The program picks out Tommy Shepherd, a boy delinquent with the power of speed and to accelerate matter causing objects to explode. The Young Avengers break into the juvenile facility that Tommy is being held at and are shocked to find that he looks identical to Billy only with white hair. Tommy says he’ll help them save Teddy as long as it means he can blow things up and it keeps him out of jail.

Teddy is being kept by the Super-Skrull who reveals that he is the product of Captain Marvel, a Kree Soldier, and the daughter to the Skrull king. The Young Avengers burst in using Tommy’s superpower and Teddy is confused, mistaking Tommy for Billy. The Super-Skrull fights back and tells Billy that he is the son of the Scarlet Witch. Billy is completely taken back by this and the fighting is interrupted by the appearance of Kree soldiers who are also looking to take Teddy back to their planet since it is every Kree citizen’s duty to join the military when they are of age. More Kree soldiers and Skrull armies appear and the skies over New York turn into a giant battle ground with Teddy being the sought after prize.

Teddy contemplates giving himself up to stop the new Kree-Skrull war that looks to explode over Earth. Billy fights with him, telling him that he won’t let Teddy just give up. Billy’s words don’t seem to make an impact and Teddy meets up with the Super-Skrull to discuss a cease fire. Teddy offers himself up to both of the armies, declaring he will split his time between both the Skrull and the Kree before ultimately deciding who to join. He leaves without even turning around to say goodbye to Billy. For a moment, Billy looks crushed but as both of the armies leave, the Super-Skrull suddenly shifts and it’s revealed that Teddy and the Super-Skrull switched places, leaving Teddy on Earth with his team.

During the fighting, Eli was seriously injured protecting Captain America. Kate informs the Avengers that this all could have been avoided had they been trained. Eli is given a blood transfusion from his grandfather who is a super soldier like Captain America and inherits his powers. The Avengers reluctantly agree that the teens are determined to continue fighting and agree to train them, giving Kate Hawkeye’s bow and arrows as well as his nickname. Teddy is finally able to grieve for his adoptive mother and wonder about his true parents while Billy is busy consoling his boyfriend and wondering about his own mysterious lineage.

Not long after the Young Avengers are teamed up with the Avengers when Billy’s powers go out of control and he seriously injures a large group of people. The Avengers are concerned - if Billy’s powers are anything like the Scarlet Witch’s then he is more powerful than they are prepared to contain. They decide to keep Billy quarantined until they understand his powers. Teddy demands that if Billy is to be kept isolated then he will be coming along. He refuses to be separated from his boyfriend. Billy is grateful but increasingly worried, not trusting his powers completely. Eventually, the other Young Avengers arrive and break Billy and Teddy out with a plan to hunt down the Scarlet Witch. Billy and Tommy had searched for her in Latveria before with no luck. The team is then intercepted by Magneto who is the Scarlet Witch’s father and Tommy and Billy’s grandfather. He decides to accompany the team to Transia where they meet up with the Scarlet Witch’s brother, Quicksilver. Billy creates a plan to use his powers to sneak into Lateveria and scout out Dr. Doom’s complex. It is rumored that the Scarlet Witch is being kept in his castle and to avoid an all out invasion, Billy is convinced he is their best option to find her. The team disagrees and Teddy tries to talk Billy out of it, telling him that his powers are too unpredictable and if it fails then Dr. Doom will have him as his prisoner. Billy reluctantly agrees but late that night he wakes up and leaves a heartfelt note for Teddy, asking forgiveness as he teleports into Lateveria, looking for the Scarlet Witch.

Teddy wakes up with Billy gone and reads the note. He immediately grabs his teammates and follows Billy, determined to kick his idiot boyfriend’s ass the moment he sees him for being a dumb idiot.

Abilities/Special Powers:
Teddy has many different special abilities. He is a shapeshifter meaning he can morph into resemble any person or creature. His superhero form mirrors that of the Hulk - he is large, muscular and green. He can also shapeshift large batwings onto his back which gives him the power of flight. Teddy also has Super Strength, being shown to be able to lift and smash much like the Hulk. His body has super regeneration. When injured, he can heal himself very quickly. In some instances he has shown to heal so fast as to prevent ongoing harm - healing to the point that the damage does not remain permanent and does not kill him. THis is similar to Wolverine’s type of regeneration. Teddy also shows traces of super stamina - being able to withstand long fights without growing weary or tired. Teddy’s skin is also impervious to damage. He is able to be thrown from a great height without sustaining damage, to be shot, stabbed and blasted with energy without being seriously injured.

Third-Person Sample:

Where was he?

The last thing Teddy remembered was storming out of the room after reading Billy’s stupid note. He was going to kill his boyfriend for being such a damned idiot but first he needed to track him down. He had been so preoccupied with what he was going to say to Billy when he saw him that he didn’t really notice that the corridor looked differentmirrors. Unless, they were stumbling on something far worse than just Dr. Doom and his doombots. Maybe they were now in the clutches of a new, different villain, one they weren’t at all prepared for.

And it possibly had Billy.

Well, if that was the case then they messed with the wrong guy because no one hurt Billy and got a way with it. Teddy made sure of that.

“Whoever you are,” he called out, his large voice echoing down the hallway. “You better let my idiot boyfriend go because if anyone is going to kick his stupid ass, it’s me. Show yourself!”

Second Attempt (I left the original above for Comparison)

Third-Person Sample:

Where was he?

The last thing Teddy remembered was storming out of the room after reading Billy’s stupid note. He was going to kill his boyfriend for being such a damned idiot but first he needed to track him down. He had been so preoccupied with what he was going to say to Billy when he saw him that he didn’t really notice that the corridor looked different until he stopped at the staircase and nearly fell down it.

This wasn’t where they had gone to sleep last night. The hallway was too long and he didn’t remember quite so many mirrors. Teddy backed away from the staircase and shifted into his Hulkling form. If this was some sort of a trap then he wanted to be ready for whatever evil villain was waiting for them.

“Patriot? Hawkeye? Speed? Is anyone around?,” he called out, using his teammates code names to protect their secret identities. His large footsteps echoed in the hallway and he looked around at all of the mirrors, trying to remember what evil villain used mirrors.

First-Person Sample:

[Teddy reaches into his pocket and pulls out a black communicator the size of his cellphone. He’s never seen something like this before but it doesn’t take him long to turn it on and adjust the setting so that he’s recording. He assumes that it must be new tech that links him up with his teammates which is perfect because what he has to say involves them listening.

He looks into the small camera and clears his throat.]

So, I don’t think any of us are surprised to hear that Billy is missing. He left me a note that said he was going into Latveria to find the Scarlet Witch.

[Teddy pauses for a moment and looks away from the camera. He’s trying to control the storm of emotions that are just below the calm exterior. He’s going to shake his idiot boyfriend when he finds him.]

I think the portal was still open this morning. When I stepped out of my room I ended up in the forest. I’m going to guess I’m in Latveria. I’m going after him. You guys…. you should follow and make sure the both of us don’t get caught doing something stupid.

[Teddy turns the device off and looks around. He doesn’t realize that he’s far from Latveria in a different world. The forest looks the same to him as it did in Europe and he heads off, shifting into his Hulkling form as he’s expecting trouble ahead. The only thought in his mind is Billy and whether to hug him or punch him when he sees his boyfriend’s stupid face.]
